A Roman cross often used the stump of a tree as the vertical member. Note the small crossbar that served as a seat for the victim. It provided the support necessary to avoid suffocation. This upright would be used on repeated occasions, with each victim carrying a crossbar to the scene.

The tablet, carried by the victim,was placed just above the crossbar.
