The hills west of Jericho are known as the Mount of Temptation, traditionally the wilderness region where Jesus was tempted for forty days (Matt 4:1). It was to these hills that Rahab directed the spies to escape detection by the men of Jericho (Josh 2:16).

Looking north across the Wadi Qilt to the dining room of Herod's winter palace of Herodian Jericho. It is south of O.T. Jericho and west of modern-day Jericho. On the north side of Wadi Qelt, just west of O.T. Jericho, Herod the Great built a much more extensive complex than the earlier palace built by the Hasmoneans in the second century B.C. Although they were burnt when Herod died, his son Archelaus restored them.
