Location and Setting
- The location of Mamre is not certain. Traditionally it has been located near the city of
Hebron, some twenty miles southwest of Jerusalem (Gen 13:18; 23:19; 35:27).
- Mamre was named after an Amorite man. Apparently, it was noted for its oak trees (Gen
14:13).
Historical and Biblical Significance
- While Abraham was resting in his tent by the oaks of Mamre, three angels visited him,
bringing him confirmation of the Lords promise that Sarah would bear him a son (Gen
18:1-15).
- The mission of the three angels also included a warning of the coming destruction of the
evil cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, where Abrahams nephew Lot lived. Abraham pleaded
that judgment be withheld if only ten righteous people could be found residing in the
cities, a request to which the angels agreed. This modest requirement was not met,
however, and God destroyed the cities with fire and brimstone (Gen 18:16-33).
