Location and Setting
- Edrei was located on the southern fork of the Yarmuk River near the southern border of
Bashan.
- Identified with present-day Der a in southern Syria, Edrei lies sixty miles south
of Damascus and thirty miles east of the Jordan River. It was on the north-south road that
ran along the edge of the eastern desert.
Historical and Biblical Significance
- Moses defeated Og, the giant king of Bashan at Edrei. Og, his sons, and all his people
were killed, allowing Israel to occupy the land of Bashan (Num 21:33; Deut 1:4; 3:1; 3:10;
Josh 12:4; 13:12).
- Edrei and the territory of Bashan were allotted to the tribe of Manasseh (Josh 13:31).
