Frequently Asked Questions

General Operations

North is East?

  • Answer: Our maps are east-oriented to be consistent with the biblical data and the way the people in the land oriented themselves geographically throughout their history. Click here for more.

I'm looking for a specific location, quick!!

  • Answer: From the menu bar select the Locations pull down menu, pull down and select your location. Click on the location name. The Sandals Program will zoom into the region of the location. (You may need to toggle between the Old Testament and Gospels to find it on the regional map.)

What are Old Testament and Gospels MODES?

  • Answer: Locations are separated into Old Testament and Gospels. You may switch back and forth between them by clicking on the menu bar buttons. (Many locations appear in both).

What are Trade Routes?

  • Answer: Although archaeological evidence is lacking, by studying the terrain of Palestine we can deduce where people would have traveled as they walked or rode from place to place. These natural travel routes followed the way of least resistance, avoiding areas of difficulty. Even thought we refer to them as "roads," they do not compare to our paved highways. They are best identified as "Trade Routes," the well worn paths people followed as they moved about in and through the land. Click here for more.
  • The Trade Routes button is located in the main menu. Clicking on this feature will overlay a highlighted trade route of ancient Palestine. Similar overlays exist for the geography and zoom windows. The buttons for overlays are toggles (they serve as "on/off" switches). A green light will indicate that the overlay is on.

What is Sandals Online?

  • Answer: Walking in their Sandals is an educational resource designed for many audiences.
    • For the Web Surfer, we maintain a Website, www.ancientsandals.com, with hundreds of thumbnail photographs, sample articles, location profiles, videos and guided tours. Please visit our site and let us know what you think.
    • For the Bible teacher or student, Sandals Online contains additional resources (not found on the CD or public web site) including new articles, PowerPoint presentations, study guides and more.

Videos

How do I launch a video?

  • Answer: Links to videos are provided in the pull down menu, in the Video Overviews page, on the regional maps where the videos were taken, and in the location profiles.
  • Click on the link (as for any hyperlink) and WAIT. Using Mpeg-1 compression, we have taken great care in balancing quality with size (7.6 MB/Min). As these videos try to launch, they will open your systems default *.mpg file player. Windows Media Player has produced the most stable results for us during testing, and will likely be the better choice. However Real Player will also work. These files average 30MB, and take time to load, (30 seconds on average) so be patient!
Tip: For best results, minimize the Sandals program when playing videos and Guided Tours.

How do I Make Windows Media Player my default *.mpg player?

  • Answer: Try this: START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - ENTERTAINMENT - Windows Media Player.
  • For Windows Media Player 6.x : VIEW - OPTIONS - FORMATS - SELECT ALL - APPLY - OK
  • Tip: For best results, minimize the Sandals program when playing videos and Guided Tours.

How do I make Windows Media Player window larger?

  • Answer: Try the Windows Media Player VIEW pull down menu. You can expand to 200% or full screen, which is just right for the LCD projection.
  • Tip: For best results, minimize the Sandals program when playing videos and Guided Tours.

Can I use the Videos (and other media) in presentations?

Guided Tours

How do I launch a Guided Tour?

  • Answer: Links to the Guided Tours are provided in the pull down menu, in the Guided Tour overviews page.
  • Click on the link, (as with any hyperlink) and WAIT.
  • Tip: For best results, minimize the Sandals program when playing videos and Guided Tours.

The Guided Tour's audio sounds are distorted.

  • Answer: To correct this, minimize the Sandals Program before pressing the play button on the Guided Tours.

When I click on a link to launch a Guided Tour nothing happens…

  • Answer: The Guided Tours run as Flash Plug-in swf files embedded in htm pages. The htm page will try to auto download the Flash plug-in if you don't already have it. Try the link provided in the user tips area on the Guided Tour Overviews page.
  • If you still have trouble downloading the Flash plug-in, you may be restricted from accessing your system registry. Contact your system administrator and ask for help to obtain the latest Flash plug-in from www.macromedia.com.

  • Click on the link (as with any hyperlink) and WAIT.
